A Hidden Lake in Colorado - A Paddler’s Paradise

Looking for your place of solace to unwind after grinding for 8 hours in front of a computer? I find paddle boarding one of the best ways to relax and reconnect with nature. There’s something about the stillness when floating on a mountain lake that introduces a new kind of calm. Although sometimes in Colorado it’s so hard to find a lake that isn’t crowded or super far away. But guess what. I found the perfect spot - Clear Lake.

Where is it?

Clear Lake is located off of Guanella Pass Rd, just south of Georgetown and only 1 hour away from Denver. To get there, you’ll want to hop on I-70 west and get off at exit 228 in Georgetown. The Google Maps address is: Clear Lake, M79X+P8, Idaho Springs, CO 80452. There is a small parking lot with a restroom, picnic tables, and grills. Clear lake is the perfect place for a picnic, fishing, and paddling. Unfortunately, swimming is not permitted.

Why is Clear Lake the absolute best?

It’s off the beaten path, meaning it’s not super crowded, and it’s breathtakingly beautiful with crystal clear waters. It’s so clear, you can actually see all the fish swimming around. You’re surrounded by stunning, towering mountains that make you feel like you’re in the clouds when you’re paddling around. Not to mention the green trim of the pines that traces the lake, adding another layer of color.

I was surprised at how quiet it was since it’s really not that far from Georgetown and the highway, but it really feels like a place that people are just passing by. If you have kayaks, canoes, or paddle boards, I would highly recommend stopping at Clear Lake the next time you’re driving west into the mountains. You will not be disappointed. There’s even some campgrounds on Guanella Pass road if you’re wanting to make a weekend trip out of it.

I also love that it’s conveniently located next to Georgetown which has a number of restaurants and breweries if you’re wanting to stop for food or drinks on your way back and make a little day trip out of it.

Which Paddle Board Should I buy?

I’d recommend buying the ROC Inflatable Stand Up Paddle Board. Out of the two paddle boards I own, this is definitely the preferred one. I’ve had it for about three years now and it’s durable, stable, and wider than the other one I have. If you’re unfamiliar with inflatable stand up paddle boards, they are super functional, easy to store and transport, and feel like a solid board when you pump it up to the suggested PSI. All paddle boards come with a hand pump, but I would recommend buying an electric pump for paddle boards. It will save you so much energy, trust me. I can’t believe I used to pump them up by hand.
