14 Unbelievable Hikes That Are Under an Hour Away from Denver

The great outdoors draws in thousands of people to Colorado each year. Home of the Rocky Mountains, Colorado’s natural beauty is undeniable — this state truly is a hikers paradise.

But for many, including myself, it can be overwhelming trying to decide where to hike, because there are simply too many options. Other’s may be discouraged to get outside because they think they have to drive house into the mountains for a decent view. But in reality, there’s so much to explore just in your backyard.

Here, I created a list of the best hikes within an hour from Denver that will hopefully help you get outside without driving too far. Whether you’re visiting looking to explore trails near Denver or a resident wanting to stretch their legs after work, this list is for you.

1. NCAR Ramble Trail

Where: Boulder, CO

Driving time from Denver: 35 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 3.3 mi

I can’t believe I just discovered this trail! Starting just south of Boulder, the NCAR Ramble Trail takes you up, down, and around to the base of the Front Range offering a unique view of the popular Flatirons. The trailhead has plenty of parking and is usually less busy than other Flatiron trails like the ones that start in Chautauqua Park. The views are truly breathtaking.

2. Royal Arch Trail

Where:  Boulder, CO

Driving time from Denver: 34 min

Trail difficulty: Hard

Trail length: 3.3 mi

This trail was more challenging than I expected, but totally worth it! Even though it’s relatively short, the elevation gain is pretty significant. The Royal Arch at the end of the trail is impressive and so are the views from the peak that overlook Boulder. It’s such a unique trail and would recommend this to anyone looking for a short challenging hike near Denver.

3. Red Rocks Trail to Cherry Gulch Loop 

Where: Golden, CO

Driving time from Denver: 20 min

Trail difficulty: Easy

Trail length: 2.9 mi

Beautiful, flat trail great for hikes and runners, especially in the spring time when everything is green and the wildflowers are in bloom. You’re surrounded by rolling, grassy hills that are absolutely gorgeous. I think this is the perfect trail if you’re looking for an easy hike after work since it’s not too long or challenging.

4. Tilting Mesa to Mesa Top Loop

Where: Golden, CO

Driving time from Denver: 25 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 3.2 mi

North Table Mountain offers so many spectacular views of Golden and the foothills of the Rockies, and this loop is definitely one of them. The trail has a more difficult start, with a pretty stark incline, but it levels off at the top of the mesa. Really cool rock formations at the top. Be aware that there is almost no shade at the top, so it can get hot when the sun is out. Always bring plenty of water.

5. Waterton Canyon Trail

Where: Littleton, CO

Driving time from Denver: 32 min

Trail difficulty: Easy/Moderate (depending on whether or not you walk the entire trail)

Trail length: 12.6

Looking for stunning canyon views that are home to bighorn sheep? Look no further than Waterton Canyon. This is a very popular trail for hikers, runners, and bikers, so get to the parking lot early or later in the afternoon if you want to find a spot. I’ve seen bighorn sheep here every time I’ve visited and it never gets old. The trail is completely flat making it another easy hiking trail near Denver that’s perfect for post work walks, a Sunday stroll, and families with kids.

6. Olivine Trail Loop

Where: Golden, CO

Driving time from Denver: 21 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 1.4 mi

This hike to Castle Rock on South Table Mountain is a must for anyone who finds themselves in Golden, Colorado. Castle Rock is the striking rock formation that towers high over the tiny mountain town and can’t be missed. It’s the perfect place to watch the sunset over the Front Range since it faces due west.

7. Flatirons Vista Trail

Where: Boulder, CO

Driving time from Denver: 32 min

Trail difficulty: Easy

Trail length: 3.5 mi

I can’t name a better spot for viewing the Flatirons. Even though they are so far away, it feels like their towering over you. Not to mention, the contrast of the lush, green fields that meet the dark, rugged mountains is stunning. The trail is pretty flat, but there is little shade. If you’re lucky, you may even be joined by a few cows or see an adorable prairie dog or two. You can also access the Flatiron Vistas via the Dowdy Draw Trail if the parking lot at this location is full.

8. Chautauqua Trail

Where: Boulder, CO

Driving time from Denver: 35 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 1.3 mi

This iconic Boulder hike offers some of the best up-close views of the Flatirons. The trail is short but moderately challenging, making it a great option for a quick nature escape with rewarding scenery. Be aware that the parking lot at Chautauqua Park fills up quickly, especially on weekends, so plan to arrive early or consider using public transportation.

9. Zorro Trail

Where: Golden, CO

Driving time from Denver: 20 min

Trail difficulty: Easy

Trail length: 1.9 mi

I was not expecting how beautiful this trail was the first time I hiked it. This switch back trail starts at the Green Mountain parking lot takes you to to the top of Dakota Ridge and offers spectacular views of Green Mountain and Red Rocks in the distance. The trail was very well maintained and dotted with wildflowers in the spring.

10. Trading Post Trail

Where: Morrison, CO

Driving time from Denver: 25 mins

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 1.6 mi

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater is home to some of the most unique rock formations in the state. Not only can you watch your favorite artist perform at the amphitheater, you can explore the surrounding area by foot. The Trading Post Trail winds through the park and takes you through some of the coolest rock formations. And yes, The rocks really are bright red.

11. Apex and Enchanted Forest Loop

Where: Golden, CO

Driving time from Denver: 23 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 3.7

The city of Denver isn’t the greenest area, especially in the summer when everything turns brown, so sometimes it’s nice to be immersed in the woods. If you’re looking for some greenery, the Enchanted Forrest Loop is it. This trail has a little bit of everything — tall trees, some mile elevation, streams, and grassy meadows.

12. Apex and Pick N Sledge Loop

Where: Golden, CO

Driving time from Denver: 20 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 4.6 mi

Apex Park is another hidden gem just outside of Denver, offering scenic foothill views and a well-maintained trail system. The Pick N Sledge Loop is one of the park’s most popular routes, known for its gradual elevation gain, shady pine sections, and sweeping views of Golden. This loop is ideal for hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers alike—though some days are hiker-only, so be sure to check the schedule before you go.

This scenic loop in Mount Falcon Park offers a little bit of everything—expansive views of the Rocky Mountains, glimpses of the Denver skyline, and even a brush with history. Along the trail, you’ll find multiple lookout points perfect for photos or a peaceful break. One of the highlights is the ruins of a historic stone castle built in the early 1900s, giving the hike a unique and whimsical touch. The trail is easy and well-marked, making it great for families, casual hikers, or anyone looking for a relaxing adventure close to Denver.

14. Eldorado Canyon Trail

Where: Eldorado Springs, CO

Driving time from Denver: 39 min

Trail difficulty: Moderate

Trail length: 6.6 mi

This stunning hike near Denver and Boulder is a must-visit for outdoor lovers. The trail winds through the dramatic landscape of Eldorado Canyon, leading you alongside a rushing creek and past scenic waterfalls. With its rugged beauty and peaceful atmosphere, it’s an ideal escape from the city.
