What It’s Really Like Eating at Alma Fonda Fina in Denver

Is This Michelin Starred Restaurant Worth It?

Alma Fonda Fina is a Michelin-starred restaurant serving mouthwatering contemporary Mexican dishes in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood.

I tried it for the first time this year, and, yes, it absolutely lived up to the hype.

In this post, I’ll break down how to get a reservation, what we ordered, and what you can expect from the dining experience. I’ll even share how much everything cost at the end.

If you’re looking for high-quality food in Denver without an outrageously expensive price tag, Alma Fonda Fina is definitely worth a visit.

How to Dine at Alma Fonda Fina

Alma Fonda Fina is located in the Lower Highlands neighborhood — or LoHi, as locals call it — just northwest of downtown Denver.

The restaurant sits in a fairly modest, inconspicuous building, so it can be easy to miss if you aren’t looking for it.

Be aware that street parking can be difficult to find, especially during peak dining hours, so make sure you arrive early enough to account for parking and walking time.

The restaurant itself is relatively small, with a mix of bar seating and table seating, which gives it an intimate and cozy atmosphere.

To guarantee a table, make sure you reserve online through their website ahead of time. Reservations can book up several months in advance, especially on weekends and during peak dining seasons.

I’ve heard they do accept walk-ins, but it’s definitely not guaranteed if they’re already fully booked, so making a reservation is your safest bet.

You can make an online table reservation here.

The Dining Experience and What We Ordered

This is where it gets fun!

Alma Fonda Fina serves shareable plates designed for the table, so you’ll likely order several dishes to split with your group.

For two people, I’d recommend ordering around four to five plates depending on your appetite. We ordered five dishes total, which felt like the perfect amount, and we left completely full.

The portions are small, but they’re not pretentiously tiny. Each dish still feels satisfying and thoughtfully prepared.

Here’s what we ordered:

Callo De Hacha Al Horno

These scallops were like tiny buttery flavor bombs. Seriously — order these as an appetizer.

This was the smallest plate we ordered, so it’s definitely not meant to be filling, but it’s one of those dishes that’s more about the experience and flavor combination than portion size.

It’s also served in the cutest little seashell plate!

Burrita De Frijoles Puercos

This dish was delicious, although it felt a little more ordinary compared to some of the other menu items.

That said, the tortilla was probably the freshest tortilla I’ve ever had in my life. Next time, I’d probably branch out and try something a little more unique.

This dish is a safe option for someone who may be less adventurous with food.

Taco Arabe

These next two tacos were top tier!

This first taco, taco arabe, was only available on the happy hour menu during our visit.

The pork was so tender and flavorful on the fluffiest sourdough tortilla.

It was paired with a white salsa that reminded me of tzatziki sauce.

Taco Campechano

The second taco, taco campechano, was very different but equally delicious.

It was a soft, salty slice of pork smothered with two different types of fresh homemade salsas on a corn tortilla.

Both of these tacos were pretty large with sizable portions of meat.

I would order either one of these tacos again!

Lenguado Al Pastor

If you love sweet and spicy flavors, you’ll probably love this dish.

The fish was genuinely some of the best I’ve ever had — it practically melted in my mouth. The habanero brings a noticeable kick, but it’s not overpowering, and it pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the pineapple.

This was easily my favorite plate of the night.

My Review

I had a wonderful dining experience at Alma Fonda Fina. It’s definitely a top competitor within the Denver food scene.

The staff were excellent — friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful when explaining menu items and answering questions.

Every dish we ordered was delicious, and you could tell each plate was carefully crafted and thoughtfully prepared. My personal favorite was the Lenguado Al Pastor, which I would absolutely recommend ordering.

For five dishes, one drink, and tip included, our bill came to about $160 for two people. For a higher-end dining experience in Denver, I thought that was surprisingly reasonable.

Overall, I’d say Alma Fonda Fina was absolutely worth the wait, and I’m already looking forward to going back and trying more of the menu.
